Frito-Lay is best known for its corn chips, potato chips, and Sun Chips. But as I learned yesterday when I spoke to employees at the company’s headquarters just outside Dallas, Texas, it’s eventually hoping to become known as the most environmentally responsible company in the world.

My presentation on “Going Green” was part of the company’s overall effort to inspire and motivate employees to save energy, reduce waste, and conserve water. I focused primarily on what people can do at home; the company understands that when people practice the same behavior at home and at work, it’s likely to become a habit.

FL has made it pretty easy for their 48,000 employees to be green at work. They encourage staff to use reusable mugs and water bottles, recycle to the max, and save energy by turning off computers and lights.

The company is ultimately aiming to have its headquarters certified “LEED Platinum,” the highest environmental rating a building can attain. Meanwhile, it’s making the packaging for its chips out of recycled materials and increasing the fuel efficiency of its fleet vehicles to reduce the amount of energy used to move its products around. It’s even using solar energy to manufacture its Sun Chips.

During my presentation, FL employees said they share the concerns of other consumers about the cost of going green; confusion about what to do; and the inconvenience of having to change their ways. But they said they felt encouraged by the support they’re getting from the company CEO to make simple changes that can lead to greater goals.

That’s a good strategy for any company, whether you’re in the Fortune 500 or one of a kind!
