<p>Maybe we can all learn something from a Sacramento, California utility that ran into the same problem with its customers. It was trying to motivate people to conserve energy, but wasn&#8217;t having much luck. Then it hit on the brilliant idea of <a title="employee incentives to save energy" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/31/science/earth/31compete.html?_r=1&amp;scp=1&amp;sq=Utilities%20Turn%20Their%20Customers%20Green,%20With%20Envy&amp;st=cse" target="_self">awarding smiley faces to customers who saved energy</a>, and frowning faces to those who didn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>It is such a simple tactic, but it&#8217;s working.  Six months after the program started, customers who earned smiley faces were curbing energy use by 2%.</p>
<p>Doesn&#8217;t that just make you smile?</p>
