Maybe all it takes is a smiley face…

smiley-faceInspiring employees to “go green” can be a tough job.  People don’t like to change their behavior, especially if they think they’re the only ones taking action.

Maybe we can all learn something from a Sacramento, California utility that ran into the same problem with its customers. It was trying to motivate people to conserve energy, but wasn’t having much luck. Then it hit on the brilliant idea of awarding smiley faces to customers who saved energy, and frowning faces to those who didn’t.

It is such a simple tactic, but it’s working.  Six months after the program started, customers who earned smiley faces were curbing energy use by 2%.

Doesn’t that just make you smile?
